Physical EducationCurriculumIn the primary grades (K,1st,1nd 2nd) the basic locomotor skills of running, hopping and skipping are the focus. These are practiced in general space activities, game situations and later in the year incorporated with music. The manipulative skills of kicking, catching and throwing are also started at this level in different degrees using varied equipment. The basic fundamentals are demonstrated, practiced and eventually combined with the locomotor skills. The intermediate grades (3rd,4th and 5th) refine their fundamental skills for more team oriented activities. A few of the team sports are soccer, football, volleyball and hockey. During the three week unit, the students refine their skills with numerous drills and challenge activities followed by lead-up games and modified rule games. The students will also learn terminology, basic strategies and teamwork through these games. At the end of some units, the students will be given a written test to gauge their knowledge and understanding of the sport. Study sheets will be provided well in advance. Throughout the year, the main points that will be focused on include sportsmanship, cooperation and teamwork. All of which (especially teamwork) can be applied in other areas of life. Competition is downplayed as much as possible in our classes. There aren't winners and losers in our physical education classes, only lots of students having fun. Too bad all professional athletes can't learn that. Intramural and club activity information will be sent home as the time nears. Most sport intramurals are directed at the 4th and 5th graders due to equipment and availability of space. One last thing, Please remind the students: "You never fail until you stop trying."
